It has only been in the last few years that I have realised that my love for melodies, poetry and written-from-the-heart songs leads me naturally to country and folk music.
I can be happy to stumble across albums written without pretension, but with feeling and, above all, a love of song-writing. This album fits that little bill beautifully.
John D Lewis is a singer whose voice has echoes of an eclectic list of influences, from John Lennon into classic country stalwarts.
Up To You is my favourite, with its infectious little guitar lick; Hard Shoulder contains the stand-out lyric on the album ('...another hard shoulder to cry on...'); and Wherever You Are, the album's piano-led closer, is written to close a summer's evening concert - with cigarette lighters in the air!
All I Can Do is one-part jangly guitar, one-part lovingly crafted melodies, and one-part honest and poetic lyrics.
Above all it is an album of excellent song-craft. It deserves to be picked up by you, and by many other people. Spread the word.
